LPN - Nursing Home Supervisor

Mandatory By Florida Law: Florida Board of Nursing

On-Line - 30 CEU Hrs - Reported to CE BROKER

Approved by Fla Board of Nursing

The purpose of this Introductory Level course is to provide training and guidance to the LPN making the transition into a supervisory role. This course is designed to be taken with an RN to discuss the course as the LPN works through the material, and that an RN Supervisor Companion Guide is available for downloading, printing, and giving to the RN supervisor.

On March 26, 2002, the Florida Legislature made changes to the rules relative to the supervisory role of the Licensed Practical Nurse. They require that any LPN performing a supervisory role must complete 30 hours of formal instruction.

For many LPN’s the idea of performing as a "Supervisor" is a totally unknown experience. Many LPN’s entered the nursing profession because he/she “wanted to care for others,” but did not plan on being in a supervisory position. Oftentimes, the LPN is not prepared for the stress that comes with supervisory responsibilities.

REL-SRC-0-FLSRPO- This course examines the different scopes of practice for different healthcare professionals and focuses attention on developing the necessary organizational and leadership skills to become a Supervisory LPN. Although this course mentions the Florida LPN supervision regulation in the course, it is appropriate for LPNs nationwide in any type of care setting as an introduction to the skills needed for supervision.

Part 2 REL-SRC-0-FLSRPT - This segment starts out with a detailed discussion of various communication strategies and the different types of individual communication styles. The student will learn about cultural differences in communication and will complete a valuable self-assessment. The importance of active listening is stressed, along with a list of do's and don'ts. Information will be provided on team building and how to be an effective team leader. The lesson concludes with information on managing employee conflict and anger. Various exercises and case studies will reinforce the learning experience.

Part 3  REL-SRC-0-FLSRPTH This segment will address all aspects of performance evaluation, including how to write a performance review and how to conduct a performance improvement session. The importance of motivation, both internal and external, will be demonstrated. The classic model, Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs will be considered. An in-depth discussion of on the job training and delegation rounds out the course. Many exercises and case studies are included.

Part 4 - REL-SRC-0-FLSRPF This course presents information concerning abuse and neglect, individual rights, advance directives, and quality of care related to pain management. As an LPN supervisor, you must understand each of these items so you can ensure staff are providing quality care.
